Preview: FryxCon 2026 – July 3-5, 2026 - Karlstad, Sweden

There are a handful of tabletop conventions with a worldwide impact that we look forward to every year. The list is probably well known to just about any gamer: UKGE, Dragonmeet, Gen Con, Essen Spiel, Origins, and PAX. We usually only get to attend the first four, and that’s despite several other international conventions in non-English-speaking countries also drawing large numbers of attendees, including Spellenspektakel, Play – Festival del Gioco, Lucca Comics & Games, LuxCon, Luxembourg Geek Xperience, Pyrkon, and more.

Although each of the above has a lot of appeal, there’s also something to be said for smaller get-togethers such as Spel Antwerpen and Spellenspektakel Gent, or even conventions organised by publishers like Mongoose Publishing and Games Workshop. FryxCon belongs firmly in the latter category but features a lot of open gaming. Even better, it’s hosted in Karlstad, Sweden, by – obviously – FryxGames, one of the most recognisable tabletop board game and card game publishers out there.

Self-marketed as the 'City of the Sun', Karlstad is one of Sweden’s sunniest cities. Its location next to Lake Vänern is ideal not just for boat tours, kayaking, and swimming, but also for sunset dining, while Mariebergsskogen is lauded as one of the country’s nicest parks. Additionally, there are enough iconic cities within a three-hour train ride to make a multi-day visit worthwhile, even for visitors from farther afield: Stockholm, Oslo, and Gothenburg – all unique places with distinct appeal and immense character.

FryxGames is run by the Fryxelius family – 16 (!) brothers and sisters, many of whom contribute to the various FryxGames titles through design, playtesting, illustration, translation, or other support. This means that just about all of the creators will be there to talk to and take pictures with while you discover upcoming releases before they reach the public, experience exclusive prototypes through hands-on demonstrations, and enjoy a host of side events.

The biggest highlight will undoubtedly be the opportunity to play Terraforming Mars: The Legacy of Mars, which raised a whopping $3,147,854 this year. The hardcore audience doesn’t seem to be tired of Red Planet gaming yet, and even if you are, there’s plenty of other great stuff to discover!
